Alexander Didn't Set Out To Create a Philosophy.
He set out to fix his voice. But somewhere along the way, in that solitary journey of watching himself in mirrors and paying exquisite attention to what he was actually doing versus what he thought he was doing, he stumbled onto something much bigger. He discovered a cure for the worst disease that human beings suffer from.
Not cancer. Not heart disease. Endgaining.
Endgaining is the relentless, largely unconscious drive to get the result at any cost — to go after what we want in a way that quietly destroys us, little by little, without us ever noticing.
We do it because we have to. Or we think we have to. Because somewhere deep in the wiring of our nervous system, there is an animal that still believes its survival is on the line every time it reaches for something.
The animal that doesn't act instantly doesn't eat. Worse, it becomes lunch. So we rush. We brace. We tighten. We endgain.
And it works, after a fashion. Our habits are very successful. The problem is that it's a limited kind of success — one that, over time, cuts us off from something larger.
Something that, as children, we had access to without even knowing it. A kind of ease, a wholeness, a capacity for genuine response rather than frantic reaction.
As we grow older, we drift further and further from it. We call this getting older. We accept it as inevitable. But it doesn't have to be.
This is what Primal Alexander is about.
At its heart, Primal Alexander takes three things that Alexander himself identified — desire to change, inhibition, and direction — and does something different at the critical moment.
Most approaches, after inhibiting (that is, pausing before the habitual response kicks in), do some form of directing, instructions or orders to put things on a better track. In Primal Alexander use questions instead of directions...
We just get curious!
"Where else do I seem to be easing a bit?"
A deceptively simple question that, through curiosity directs our attention to places at that moment in our body that already seem to be a little bit easier than other places.
Not where is the tension. Not where is the pain. Not where should I be doing better. But where, right now, in this moment, is something already functioning a little more freely?
It's a small shift in attention. But neurologically, it is enormous — because, as it turns out, you don't actually find ease by looking for it. You create it by asking the question. The question itself is the creates ease because deciding to become curious in this way signals your nervous system that you "feel" safe and that shifts you out of survival mode.
As soon as you do that, you've changed everything. You've stepped out of the mode that sacrifices a lot of the higher functions in us in order to optimize your physical survival which is the ultimate end to gain.
When curious, a "wider" nervous system functions that is capable of perceiving possibility rather than just pursuing targets. It's almost like a spiritual nervous system. One oriented not toward just surviving, but toward the bigger picture of what it might mean to be a human being.
Next in Primal Alexander comes the experiment. Having noticed that little bit of ease, you bring it into activity. You don't try to hold onto it. (that's just Endgaining dressed up for dinner). Instead, you simply get curious about what happens to the Ease as you move, as you act, as you engage with whatever the task is.
Does it continue? Does it fade? You don't know, and — crucially — you release your attachment to the outcome. You just look. That looking, that open, non-attached curiosity, is itself a form of inhibition. You've given up endgaining, just for a split second. And in that split second, something shifts on a fundamental level.
This is not a surface change. It's not a new hairdo. It's something about the way you look at yourself and the way you interact with the world and other people. It's a fundamental redirection — away from the animal scramble toward survival and toward the fuller possibilities of being human.
We have built remarkable structures to keep us insure our survival — culture, medicine, law, technology, community. We no longer need to run for our lives or chase our dinner across the savannah.
And yet most of us are still running and chasing, internally, every moment of the day. All that freed-up biological energy with nowhere to go except into tension, anxiety, performance pressure, and the grinding sense that we are always behind, always at risk, always one wrong move from catastrophe.
Primal Alexander offers a way to use that energy differently. Not to suppress it, not to manage it, but to redirect it — toward curiosity, toward openness, toward the experiment of discovering what you actually are when you stop insisting so hard on what you need to become.
Teaching this work is even more powerful, because when you're teaching most effectively, you are face-to-face with your own endgaining every moment. Your student helps you to see, with perfect clarity, the difference between what happens when you endgain and when you don't.
When you don't, something beautiful occurs between you and that other person — something that goes far beyond your mutual improvement. It's a fundamental shift. A few seconds of real freedom.
And a few seconds, it turns out, is more than enough time to change the direction of a life.
